- Abstract
-
Madelyn Smythia is a second year student at Sewanee: The University of the South. Smythia is originally from Murfressboro, TN. But, she currently resides near Bell Buckle, TN. At Sewanee, she is pursuing a double major in history and music. Smythia was first exposed to Black Lives Matter on the news after the death of George Floyd. In addition to further exposure from social media, her friends’ experiences, and researching the topic herself, she supported the movement as well as much of her family. Smythia also cited her status as Gen Z being a factor in developing her views since Gen Z typically has more access to researching such topics. As a general supporter, she dreads that the movement is slowing down. She thinks that race relations have not improved. Smythia cites the misinformation that was spread on social media diluting the message of Black Lives Matter. Although she has not actively participated in any Black Lives Matter protests, she is looking forward to participating soon. She also hopes to see a change in sentiments and views in her community and some of her family members.
